The Night Strangers by Chris Bohjalian

I almost did not pick this book up because it is a ghost story. But, I have to tell you it was a fast-paced, well-written read and I really enjoyed it. Yes, parts of the story are familiar to me as concepts that have been looked at before. However, Mr. Bohjalian puts it all together very well.

The setting is an old house in northern New Hampshire. A young couple with twin girls moves in. The husband, a former airline pilot, and his wife, a lawyer hope to make a fresh start in their new home. Things start getting mysterious when the husband discovers a door in the basement with 39 bolts across it. Thirty-nine just happens to be the number of people killed in a tragic airplane crash that is all too familiar to the husband.

A group of herbalists in the small town take an interest in the twin girls and things start to move quickly as the girls become immeshed in learning the properties of herbs.

Another great read from a great author.
