Black Out by Lisa Unger

A woman falls in love with a prisoner on death row. She actively pursues a new trial for a man she believes is innocent. He is acquitted and begins a new life with his new wife. Simple, yet complicated.

The formerly incarcerated man has a son who is unquestionably strange. He develops a relationship with his stepsister and as the story unfolds, we become aware of the psychological hold he has on the people around him, primarily his stepsister.

This story looks at the underpinnings of an different view of the world. As the reader we are privy to how a corrupted mind thinks. We find ourselves wanting to sympathize with the main character but also being very wary about the way she deals with her world. At every turn the reader questions who is being truthful and who is lying.

An absorbing look into the world of a mind that has been manipulated and corrupted almost beyond repair.
