The Drowning River by Kim Byrne

Another first time author—there have been many this year—and some have been good and some not-so-good.

The Drowning River takes place on the campus of a small New England college. Elsie Moloney has arrived at the college to take up graduate coursework. Upon her arrival, a fellow classmate spots her and exclaims, “I thought you were dead”.

The mystery surrounds the birth of twin baby girls two decades prior to the beginning of this story. One of the twins was kept by the birth mother and the other twin was adopted by another family. Neither of the twins ever knew she was a twin. One of the twins suffers a mysterious death at a bridge, while the other moves to the same campus to continue her graduate studies.

The reader is led on a path of deception which results in the uncovering of many secrets held by classmates in regard to the death of Hannah. It was quite a surprise to discover at the end of the book who the perpetrator was.

A good, fast-paced mystery.
