The Ape House by Sara Gruen

I believe one of the marks of a good author is their ability to draw the reader in from the first few chapters. And so……Ape House by Sara Gruen is just such a book. From the beginning she is able to have the reader commit to the plight of the bonobos. Although I never heard of this species before, I found myself interested in them right from the get-go.

This is the story of a group of intelligent apes who are being studied in a facility. A bomb goes off and the apes are displaced. They end up being exploited by an unsavory individual. Isabele has a penchant for bonobos. She has been working with them for years and considers them family. She must do everything she can to save them from the possibility of destruction. She joins forces with a newspaper reporter and together they work to free the bonobos.

I discovered I cannot just walk away from this book. I fully intend on reading the other non-fiction books the author recommends. Not quite the phenomenon of “Water for Elephants” but a good book none-the-less.
