The Abstinence Teacher by Tom Perrotta

This book is flooded with satire and one should be aware of that before reading it. I was not. I do make it a point not to read the book flap before beginning a story and feel that this keeps me from assuming a point of view before I get immersed in the storyline.

Ruth Ramsey is the human sexuality teacher at a high school. Tim Mason (a former stoner and rocker AND Evangelical Christian) is the soccer coach. And so the story begins.

Ruth, on the lookout for a new man in her life, might appear to some judgmental folks as having no morals. After all, she does not embrace abstinence as the only alternative to sex. But in truth Ruth does have a moral code and it is brought forth in an encounter with an old high school classmate.

Tim appears to be a perfect example of a perfect Christian but in fact is a sinner and therefore a REAL Christian. Were it not for the watchful eye of his pastor, who knows what might befall him.

This book is really very funny! You can’t take it seriously and then again maybe you should.

Ladybookbug!
