Clare Burke is a sister, lover, aunt and friend.  She and her sister Anne share many memories and secrets from their childhood.  As adults they are not as close as they were when they were children.

Anne marries and lives in Montauk, New York for a time.  Her husband Frederick is a strange man who is not fond of Clare and does all he can to keep Anne and Clare apart.  One fateful day Clare visits her sister and the children.  An incident occurs which changes their lives forever.

Both sisters move on-Clare to New York and Anne to Denmark.  Almost twenty years pass and Anne's daughter, Brit comes to New York for an unanticipated visit.  She and Clare reconnect and form a friendship.
