A Change in Altitude by Anita Shreve

Margaret and Patrick embark on an adventure to Kenya. Patrick, a doctor and Margaret, a photojournalist are not prepared for the dangers that befall them in Africa. A series of robberies results in their relocation to a cottage on the grounds of a large estate. They develop a friendship with Diana and Arthur who persuade them to join them in a climb of Mount Kenya.

Unfortunately, a terrible accident occurs during the climb which affects the climbers dramatically and they decide to climb back down the mountain. Margaret is profoundly affected by the tragedy and attempts to get beyond it by relocating their home to an apartment in the city.

In an attempt to assuage her guilt Margaret and Patrick decide to climb the mountain again and engage another couple to join them. It is during this second attempt that Margaret comes to grips with her feelings.

I’ve read all of Ms. Shreve’s novels. My favorite thus far was The Pilot’s Wife. I thought the movie version was very reflective of the book and I enjoyed it as well.

This book had a unique premise but I would not say I loved it.

Ladybookbug!
